The Benefits of Biodiesel

It sounds nice to say biodiesel is a recycled fuel, but what does it actually mean? Are there real benefits that impact you? Consider some of the benefits for yourself.

Clean and Green

Biodiesel has passed Tier I and Tier II health effects testing requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1990. Results indicate that it is biodegradable and non-toxic with no threat to human health. It also improves the air quality and health of communities. It burns cleaner than petroleum diesel, which means less particulate matter, carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and other smog-causing particles.

Safety

Fuel is inherently dangerous, but biodiesel has a higher flash point than petroleum-based diesel fuel. This reduces the fire risks associated with transportation, storage, and utilization of the fuel comparatively. It's also safe to handle because it's biodegradable like sugar and less toxic than salt.

Renewable

Fossil fuels are derived from a finite source. However, biodiesel comes from renewable sources like cooking oil or fry oil. Fry oil comes from plants, which is a green resource. It's plentiful and economically affordable. During the recycling process of fry oil, the wastewater is extracted with an advanced conversion process and reused for ultimate sustainability.

American-Made

With biodiesel, you're keeping things American. The risk of foreign oil dependence is real, but biodiesel is made coast to coast with raw materials from each region. It can be made locally from specific byproducts or coproducts including soybean oil in the grain belt, recycled cooking oil in urban areas, and animal fats from rendering plants in the southwest. The options are endless!

Marketable

Biodiesel isn't a fuel that no one can use. In fact, it's typically mixed with petroleum-based diesel. This creates a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% regular diesel. Known as B20, this blend is popular and marketable for many uses.

Ready for Use

Biodiesel and B20 blends can be used in most diesel vehicles with no significant impact on the engine's functionality. Tests have shown that the horsepower, consumption, and torque levels are comparable to pure petroleum diesel. Plus, biodiesel offers more lubricity for the engine comparatively.
